Feeding those on Free School Meals due to low income
At Chichester District Foodbank we recognise that there are many needs in our community. Across the district of Chichester, there are 1,000 children and young people on free school meals due to low income. However, there is no provision in school holidays for these individuals. As a foodbank we wanted to provide greater support for these families so that they would not go hungry over these periods. Since 2016, we have been partnering with a growing network of schools across the district to enable access to food for these families.
How it works:
We provide vouchers to schools to give to their students who are free school meals due to low income. The families can then come to one of our collection points to collect a lunch box. They are allowed one per child and this provide nutritional meals for 2 working weeks. Over the summer, they have the opportunity to come back twice so that they are covered for the whole 6 weeks period.
We provide opportunities across the district with locations in Midhurst, Petworth, Chichester and Selsey for collection.
Currently we have connected with 40+ schools across the district. As part of our ongoing strategy, we will be continuing to grow the scheme in the next school year. If you are a school and are interested in getting involved, please visit the contact us page.
