In Times of Need: The Stories of Siobhan, Lowri, and Steve

3rd April 2024

In the heart of our community, the Chichester District Foodbank serves as a beacon of hope for individuals and families navigating through their toughest times. The stories of Siobhan, Lowri, and Steve are just a few of the many that highlight the critical role of foodbanks in providing not just food, but a lifeline to those in crisis.

Siobhan’s journey into the realm of foodbanks began when life dealt her an unexpected card, transforming her into a full-time carer for her father at the young age of 25. The subsequent struggle with the benefits system left them without any income for a year, pushing them towards the brink of despair. The foodbank became their sanctuary, a place where Siobhan found not just essential food, but also a community that understood and supported her through her darkest times. “I felt like someone is taking care of me for a minute, that’s good’’ she reflects, yet she remains grateful for the help she received when it seemed like all other doors had closed.

Lowri’s story echoes the unexpected turns life can take. Having worked all her life, Lowri found herself in a dire situation when she was forced to liquidate her business. The emotional and financial toll was immense, leading her to the steps of the foodbank “in bits.” What she found was more than just food; she found a compassionate community ready to support her through recovery, proving that the foodbank is as much about feeding the soul as it is about feeding the body.

Steve’s narrative adds another layer to the mosaic of food bank stories. A security worker by profession, an injury left him with limited mobility and energy, drastically altering his life’s path. Benefits couldn’t cover the basics, and without a clear way out, he turned to the foodbank for help. There, Steve found not just the support to find his feet again, but also a purpose. Volunteering at the food bank has become his way of giving back, helping others in the same way he was helped. “I was in the right place and I did need that help, from there I realised that I really wanted to help people in the same situation” he shares, highlighting the cyclical nature of support and community.

These stories, each unique in their circumstances, are bound by a common thread—the invaluable support provided by their local foodbank. Beyond the emergency food parcels, Chichester District Foodbank stands as a testament to the strength of community, offering not just physical nourishment, but also hope, support, and a path forward for those who find themselves in need.

Chichester District Foodbank’s work is only possible through the generous donations and tireless efforts of volunteers and supporters. In sharing the stories of Siobhan, Lowri, and Steve, we are reminded of the profound impact of community support and the difference it can make in the lives of local people in crisis.
