World Lupus Day: A call for awareness and support

10th May 2024

May 10th marks World Lupus Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about lupus, a chronic autoimmune disease that can damage any part of the body. At Chichester District Foodbank, we recognise the challenges faced by those living with lupus and strive to shine a light on the need for greater understanding and support within our community.

Understanding lupus Lupus is a disease where the immune system becomes hyperactive and attacks healthy tissue, resulting in symptoms ranging from mild to life-threatening. The condition can affect the skin, joints, kidneys, brain, and other organs, leading to a wide range of symptoms including fatigue, joint pain, rash, and fever. Because lupus can affect so many different organs, each person’s experience with the disease is unique, making it a complex condition to understand and diagnose.

The impact on daily life Living with lupus can be challenging. The unpredictable flare-ups and chronic pain can severely impact daily activities, employment, and relationships. The variability of symptoms not only complicates diagnosis and treatment but also adds to the emotional and psychological burden of the disease.

Chichester District Foodbank’s role As part of our commitment to supporting the well-being of all community members, Chichester District Foodbank recognises the extra challenges faced by those living with chronic illnesses like lupus. Our services aim to provide not just food, but also comfort and support to those in crisis, including people affected by long-term health conditions. We offer a safe space and a supportive community to help manage the pressures that come with such conditions.
