Leap year 2024: An extra day to make a difference

29th February 2024

This year gives us an extra day and while for many, February 29 is a novelty, an extra day in the calendar, at Chichester District Foodbank, we see it as much more than that. It’s an additional day of hunger for those we serve, an extra day where the support and generosity of our community are needed more than ever.

Leap years come once every four years, offering us all an additional 24 hours. This year, we’re inviting our community to reflect on the significance of this extra day. For individuals and families facing food insecurity, each day can be a challenge, filled with uncertainty about where the next meal will come from. The leap year underscores the ongoing, daily need for support – making it an opportune moment for us all to contribute.

How you can help

This leap year, consider marking February 29 as a day of action and compassion. Here are a few ways you can make a meaningful difference:

Donate Food

Use the extra day to gather and donate non-perishable food items to the Chichester District Foodbank. Our most needed items list can be found here ensuring your donation meets the current needs of those we serve.

Volunteer Time

Leap into volunteering! February 29 could be the perfect opportunity to start volunteering with us, whether sorting donations, helping in our office, or assisting directly with those who come to us for help. See our volunteer positions here.

Financial Support

An extra day in the year means an extra day of operational costs. A financial donation to the Foodbank can help us continue our vital work, not just on February 29 but throughout the year. If you’d like to support us this way, please see here.

Let’s transform this additional calendar day into a collective leap of kindness. By coming together to support the Chichester District Foodbank, we can ensure that for those in need, February 29 isn’t just another day of challenges, but a day filled with community support and hope.

This leap year, let your extra day be a day of extra giving. Together, we can make a leap towards ending hunger in our community.
