Over the past year, our food bank has provided almost 6,000 emergency food parcels to people facing hardship across Chichester District.
These stats tell some of the story, and show us why we need to work to see the end for the need for food banks.
Trends
Food parcels:
Over the past year, Chichester District Foodbank provided 5,723 emergency food parcels to individuals (39% being children).
This is a 7.8% decrease from the previous year. However we have seen a 70% increase compared to 5 years ago.
Reasons for support:
The top 3 reasons that people need to use our food bank are:
- Rising cost of essentials (53%)
- Cost of dependents (17%)
- Priority debt (14%)
Donations:
We have seen a 4.8% reduction in food donations over the past year.
We are still heavily reliant on people dropping food donations in our baskets at supermarkets. We received 41% of our donations through that method with churches (11%) and schools (8%) making up the next largest donors.
Stock purchases:
As donations decrease and demand increases, we have had to purchase in stock more regularly to maintain stock levels.
Last year we purchased 20% of our food.
