Following the fantastic response to our Bites on a Budget pilot in Chichester earlier this year, and a successful follow-up course in Midhurst, we’re excited to announce the release of our brand new Bites on a Budget leaflet – featuring six delicious, low-cost recipes. Download Bites on a Budget for free here.
We’ll have free printed copies available for people to take at our Chichester Foodbank centre from Monday 14 July, and if they’re popular with clients, we’ll distribute them across the district.
What is Bites on a Budget?
Bites on a Budget was created to help people develop cookery skills and build community connections. After hearing from people who use our food bank who weren’t sure how to turn the ingredients in their parcels into tasty meals, we wanted to offer practical support and bring people together to cook and share.
The recipes, designed by Anton Korolenko, Head Chef at Waterhaven Place Care Home, use ingredients commonly found in food bank parcels, store-cupboard staples and fresh produce. And now they’re available for everyone to enjoy!
The savoury dishes are packed with vegetables, including options like Creamy Chickpea and Paprika Soup and a hearty Bean and Vegetable Stew. There are also two sweet treats that are family favourites: Apple & Fruit Flapjacks and Fruit Crumble with Custard.
As Anton explained:
“This project is an opportunity to bring people together who like food and enjoy cooking it. It’s ideal for people who would like to expand their cooking skills, without breaking the bank. We have had an amazing group of people, and it was sheer joy to be part of this journey.”
A recipe for connection
More than just cooking, Bites on a Budget has helped bring people together. Feedback from participants has been overwhelmingly positive, with one attendee sharing:
“I learnt different tips – making delicious meals with great food and cheap items.”
Another added that they loved:
“meeting new people, learning from different nationalities,” and appreciated the strong sense of community.”
This week we received an email and photos from Julia, who attended the Midhurst course, who told us:
“I’m making the chickpea soup. It’s exciting being able to home cook and my daughter loves home cooking too.”

We’re so pleased with the response to this project — it’s been wonderful to see how it has brought people together through food. Even more encouraging is that attendees are using the skills they’ve learned at home. It shows that with a bit of creativity and the right support, good food doesn’t have to be complicated.
Show us your creations!
If you try any of the recipes, we’d really love you to email us your photos and experience of making them at [email protected] or tag us on social media.
