Throughout the month of February, we ran a series of cookery workshops, with a focus on learning how to turn the everyday ingredients typical of what’s included in the Food Bank’s emergency food parcels, into delicious, healthy and budget-friendly meals. With the addition of a few store cupboard staples and affordable fruit and vegetables, attendees created the most delicious meals, which were shared together at the end of each session.
Practical cookery skills and guidance was on hand from Head Chef at Waterhaven Place Care Home Anton Korolenko, who devised a selection of recipes that were both simple and full of variety.
“This project is an opportunity to bring people together who like food and enjoy cooking it,” commented Anton. “It’s ideal for people who would like to expand their culinary horizons, without breaking the bank. We have had an amazing group of people, and it was sheer joy to be part of this journey.”
Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. One participant said, “I learnt different tips – making delicious meals with great food and cheap items”, and collectively, the group enjoyed “meeting new people, learning from different nationalities” and felt a “sense of community”.
None of this would have been possible without the generous funding from Ian Williams Limited, who kindly supplied the required equipment that will also be used in future projects across the district in years to come and Anton Korolenko, who volunteered to give his time and expertise to this worthwhile project.
If you have experienced the sharp end of the cost of living and would be interested in attending similar cooking-based workshops in the future, please register your interest by emailing our Campaigns Coordinator Keely Storey – [email protected].
