Hygiene Awareness Week: Tackling Hygiene Poverty with The Hygiene Bank

8th October 2024

Every year, Hygiene Awareness Week shines a spotlight on a crucial yet often overlooked issue: hygiene poverty. Many people are familiar with the concept of food poverty, but hygiene poverty affects millions who lack access to basic hygiene products like shampoo, laundry detergent or deodorant.

It’s a silent struggle that can lead to embarrassment, isolation, and a knock-on effect on health and wellbeing. For many on low incomes, it becomes a choice between being able to heat their homes, pay rent, eat or be clean.

But thanks to The Hygiene Bank and similar initiatives, food banks are able to distribute not only food but also crucial items like soap, sanitary products, nappies, and household cleaning products.

During Hygiene Awareness Week, you can support The Hygiene Bank by:

  1. Donating products: Drop off hygiene essentials like soap and toothpaste at a local collection point.
  2. Raising awareness: Share information on social media or with friends and family.
  3. Volunteering: Help sort and distribute donations.
  4. Financial support: Donate to help The Hygiene Bank purchase items in bulk.

Hygiene poverty is a solvable issue, and with community support, we can ensure everyone has access to the basics they deserve.
