Affordable and delicious hummus recipe using tinned chickpeas

21st August 2024

Hummus is a versatile and nutritious spread that can be a staple in your weekly shopping. Not only is it delicious, but it’s also incredibly affordable, especially when you use tinned chickpeas; an item we often receive as donations at Chichester District Foodbank. Here’s a simple recipe to make your own hummus at home.

Ingredients:

  • 1 can of chickpeas, drained
  • 60ml cold water, plus an additional 30ml if you prefer a looser consistency
  • 1 small garlic clove, peeled and crushed
  • 1 lemon, juiced and half zested
  • 3 tbsp tahini (optional)
  • 1 tbsp olive oil (optional, for garnish)

Method:

Prepare the chickpeas: Rinse the chickpeas thoroughly and pour them into a food processor. Add 60ml of cold water and blitz until the chickpeas are almost smooth.

Add flavour:

Add the crushed garlic, lemon juice, zest, and tahini to the processor. Blitz again until the mixture is smooth and creamy. If you prefer a smoother consistency, add an additional 30ml of water and blend again.

Season and serve:

Season your hummus with salt and pepper to taste. If desired, drizzle with olive oil before serving for an extra touch of richness.

This hummus is not only easy to make but also a great way to incorporate a healthy, protein-rich spread into your meals. Enjoy it as a dip with vegetables, a spread on sandwiches, or even as a topping for salads.

By making your own hummus, you’re not only saving money but also making a healthy choice that can be part of your regular diet. Whether you’re using it as a snack or part of a meal, hummus is a simple, satisfying option that everyone in the family can enjoy.
