A story of resilience and Support: A Grandmother’s struggle to help her family

10th July 2024

At Chichester District Foodbank, we hear many stories of resilience and the struggle to make ends meet. Recently, a lovely person shared her story at one of our Stand Stronger Together events, shedding light on the challenges faced by many families in our community.

Her story

“I am a Nan to a single parent family consisting of my daughter and her three sons. I share the care at the weekends of the eldest two (one is registered disabled and has complex needs). My daughter and I do not drive, and she currently lives in a large housing development with one major shop and another local shop where prices are over the top.

Consequently, if she requires help from food banks, this is by making calls to be issued a voucher. She will need to pay bus fare both ways to get to either Bognor or Chichester and lug items back on her toddler’s buggy! This is providing that a food bank is open and that she can make it there and back before the older children return from school.

Every week I am sending packages of food (and toilet rolls) to help feed them. Their free school meals do not usually fill them up, so the eldest also takes cold pasta. The disabled child has a choking problem (and is also a fussy eater), so I provide the school with cereal for the days he can’t eat their food.

In the past, I have had to put both electric and gas on her (unasked for) prepayment meters, which has caused me to fall behind on my own bills. I am constantly searching for bargains and out-of-date items which I can freeze for them to take back home to make sure they do not go hungry.

Once upon a time, I provided them with healthy options, but now, with the high cost, it is sadly impossible.”

This story underscores the importance of our work and the need for community support. It also highlights the immense challenges faced by families in our area, particularly those who rely on public transport and live in areas with limited access to affordable groceries.

At Chichester District Foodbank, we are committed to providing more than just food. Our Stand Stronger Together events and signposting services aim to connect individuals with the support they need, whether it’s food assistance, financial advice, or help accessing other community resources.
