Shine a light on Carers Week

10th June 2024

Carers Week is an annual campaign dedicated to raising awareness about the vital role of carers, highlighting the challenges they face, and recognising the immense contribution they make to families and communities across the UK. This week helps people who may not identify as carers realise their role and access essential support.

A carer is anyone who looks after a family member or friend who has a disability, mental or physical illness, addiction, or needs extra help as they grow older. The impact of caring can be profound, affecting relationships, health, finances, and work. While many find caring deeply rewarding, it is also a significant responsibility that can be challenging without the right information and support.

It is crucial to recognise the contributions carers make to their families, communities, workplaces, and society. Carers need to be acknowledged for the difficulties they face, respected for their efforts, provided with information, and given the support necessary to care safely and effectively.

This year’s theme, ‘Putting Carers on the Map,’ aims to ensure that the voices of unpaid carers are heard across all sectors of society, including politicians, employers, service providers, educational institutions, journalists, and local communities. We want to make caring more visible, ensuring carers feel seen, respected, and able to access the services and support they need.
