The cost of food for dietary requirements and how you can help

29th October 2024

At Chichester District Foodbank, we’re committed to ensuring that everyone has access to nutritious food, no matter their dietary needs. A recent report by Coeliac UK highlights the increased cost and limited access to gluten-free products. And it’s not just gluten-free products that are more expensive. For those living with coeliac disease, other food intolerances or allergies, the price of meeting dietary requirements can be overwhelming, making it even harder for individuals who rely on food banks to get what they need.

This month, 10% of the boxes packed at our Chichester food bank centre have included items tailored to specific dietary requirements. We strive to provide suitable food for everyone who receives food from our food bank, however, donations of these items are often lower than we need. That’s why we’re asking for your support.

When you donate to our food bank, consider picking up products that cater for specific diets, such as gluten-free, dairy-free, vegan or halal items, to help ensure that no one is left out. Your contributions go a long way in supporting those who have limited choices due to medical, ethical or cultural reasons, allowing us to meet the needs of our entire community.

Most supermarkets offer ‘free from’ aisles, stocking non-perishable foods that cater to specific dietary needs, such as dairy-free milk, nut-free snacks, and gluten-free bread or pasta.

We can only accept non-perishable, in-date items with clear ingredient lists on the packaging. This is especially crucial for those with allergies or intolerances due to Natasha’s Law which underscores the serious consequences that can arise if someone unknowingly consumes food that is unsuitable for their diet.

We’re incredibly grateful for the support from our Chichester community. Together, we can ensure that everyone who relies on our food bank receives food that meets their dietary needs.
